The third and final regatta of the 2022 World Rowing Cup series will take place in Lucerne, Switzerland the following weekend. For many nations, this will be their final significant chance to compete internationally before the crucial September 2022 World Rowing Championships.

The World Rowing Cup III in 2022 will include 17 boat classes and more than 600 rowers from 39 different countries with 70 athletes, China will be sending the largest squad

At the 2022 World Rowing Cup II earlier this season, China won gold in the men’s and women’s quadruple sculls. In an effort to improve on their World Cup ranks from earlier in the season, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom are also sending sizable teams to the Rotsee, commonly known as the “lake of the gods.” Large squads will be sent by Italy and Romania for the first time in 2022.

The reigning Olympic Champion Emma Twigg of New Zealand, the 2018 World Rowing Champion Jeanine Gmelin of Switzerland, and the Olympic Bronze Medalist Magdalena Lobnig of Austria are anticipated to face off in the women’s single sculls. Since the A-Final in Tokyo, where Twigg won the gold medal, the three haven’t competed against one another. Hannah Scott of Great Britain, who won the bronze medal in the first World Rowing Cup in 2022, Donata Karaliene of Lithuania, and Diana Dymchenko, a former Ukrainian rower who now represents Azerbaijan, will also be in attendance.

There is a ton of competition in the men’s single sculls, with Oliver Zeidler of Germany, the World Rowing Cup I champion, taking on Kjetil Borch of Norway, the silver medalist from the Olympics in Tokyo. After undergoing surgery a few months ago, Borch is attempting to regain strength this season. For this regatta, the French have divided their men’s double sculls Olympic champions into two singles once more. Olympic silver medalist Damir Martin of Croatia, World Rowing Cup I bronze medalist Graeme Thomas of Great Britain, Olympians Mindaugas Griskonis of Lithuania, Luca Rambaldi of Italy, and Kaspar Taimsoo of Estonia will also be in attendance.

In the women’s pair, reigning Olympic champions Grace Prendergast and Kerri Williams (née Gowler) of New Zealand will compete against Esme Booth and Emily Ford of Great Britain for the first time. At the first World Rowing Cup, Booth and Ford won gold. In the men’s pair, New Zealand’s Matt MacDonald and Tom Mackintosh, who won in Poznan, will compete against Tom George and Oliver Wynne-Griffith, winners in Belgrade.

Returning Olympic champions Canada and Romania will compete against Australia, who won the bronze medal in Poznan, in the women’s eight. The men’s eight has ten boats entered, the most at a World Rowing Cup since 2017. All eyes will be on Germany and Great Britain, who were separated last year in Lucerne by only 0.03 seconds and are both on recovery routes following the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

On July 7th at 15:30 CET, the heats’ draw will take conducted. The athlete lane selection (ALS), which was first used for the World Rowing Cup II in Poznan in 2022, will be reinstituted. This will provide athletes and coaches more tactical decision-making options by letting the athletes choose their lane depending on how they placed in the previous race.

On Friday, July 8 at 9:00 CET, the women’s pair heats will kick off the competition. Following repechages, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, which are raced over two days on Saturday, July 9, for the international boat classes, and Sunday, July 10, for all Olympic boat classes, the competition continues.
