Olympic Champions win gold in Spain’s slalom competition

Jiri Prskavec of the Czech Republic and Ricarda Funk of Germany finished the 2022 K1 world cup season with victories on Saturday at Le Seu in Spain, Both athletes are Olympic champions
Prskavec secured the 2022 K1 World Cup Champions title with his second victory of the season. Jessica Fox of Australia didn’t make it to the women’s K1 final on Saturday, but she still won the overall title thanks to her four world cup victories this season.
As the Olympic channel celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where canoe slalom was reintroduced to the competition program, it was treated to some more outstandingcanoe slalom displays.
Nothing about Ricarda Funk’s 2022 season opener prepared her for what actually happened. Although she didn’t make the final at the European Championships and had to sit out two World Cups due to Covid, the rest of the season went swimmingly.
After successfully defending her ICF world title in Augsburg in July, Funk won gold on Saturday by completing her final run without making any mistakes.
The way my season has gone has exceeded my expectations. My plans for the World Cup did not start off well because I was unable to attend the first two tournaments due to a Covid infection. Funk admitted, “I was disappointed because the timing was so bad.”
To top it all off, I was able to win the global championships right here in front of my friends and family. Seriously, I don’t believe it. I didn’t feel confident going through the spin gates on such a challenging course.

There was a lot of pressure. To put it simply, I was completely spent by the end. I was really immersed in the experience. I must get some downtime.
The German winner had a fantastic race, beating the other finalists by about four seconds. Third place went to Andorran runner Monica Doria Vilarrubla, followed by Frenchwoman Camille Prigent by 3.89 seconds.
Although Australian kayaker Fox entered La Seu with a perfect record of four wins in four races in the 2022 World Cup series, he did not have a good day and finished 11th, missing the final by one spot. However, this did not prevent her from taking home the World Cup in any category.
Fox finished the season with 304 points, 217 points behind runner-up Mallory Franklin of Great Britain, and 214 points behind third-place Tereza Fiserova of the Czech Republic.
Jiri Prskavec, a Czech kayaker and the season’s finest performer, left no room for surprise in the men’s final. Although he had a slight collision with gate 22, he managed to come in first overall.
The challenge was all the way across the track, from right to left. “The jigs were brutal,” Prskavec admitted.
I had a perfect run going until the final turn, when I may have tried to rush things too much. There was one spot where I needed a helping hand, but even so, I still managed to finish first.
Prskavec had previously celebrated a world cup victory earlier in the season in Ljubljana – Tacen, making this victory his second world cup victory outside of Prague.
Martin Srabotnik, a Slovenian, successfully defended his world cup title from Ljubljana in June and earned his second world cup medal overall. In the end, it was Czech athlete Vit Prindis who came out on top, winning bronze.
For the third time, Prskavec has won the World Cup overall after amassing 317 points over the course of five races (2018, 2019, 2022). Prskavec and Vit Prindis, two other Czech paddlers, have dominated the world cup rankings for the past few years in a row.
It’s the ideal way to wrap out the World Cup. Taking first place in the competition as a whole is a major accomplishment. Prskavec said, “I couldn’t be happier.”
For me, finishing in fifth place this year is the lowest of my results. I was a little bummed out because it happened at the world championships. It was a pleasant season overall.
Despite winning the event in 2021, Prindis placed second with 252 points, behind the three-time defending champion and current third-place finisher, Slovenian Peter Kauzer (2009, 2011, and 2015).
Canoe slalom world cup finals and extreme slalom will be held on the final day of competition in 2022, which is Sunday.
